What is Botox and how does it work?

Botox is a popular cosmetic injection that treats wrinkles and fine lines in the face and other areas of the body. It is made from botulinum toxin derived from the bacteria that cause food poisoning.

Botox has been approved in the UK since 2002 for cosmetic use. But this injection is not just for cosmetic purposes. You can use it to treat medical conditions such as crossed eyes (exotropia) and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). In addition, Botox was also approved in 2016 to treat muscle spasms in adults with cervical dystonia.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox works by blocking signals from nerves leading to muscles. This prevents muscle contractions that cause wrinkles when muscles are active or contracted for long periods (static lines). When administered by an experienced physician, Botox can temporarily alter facial muscle movement and help reduce visible signs of ageing associated with dynamic lines such as frowns.

How Is Botox Used for Wrinkles?

Botox is injected into the muscle beneath the skin. It blocks nerve impulses to that muscle, which relaxes it, preventing it from contracting. This anti wrinkle treatment reduces wrinkles by smoothing out facial muscles that pull on the skin when they contract, causing lines and folds to form in your face.

Types of wrinkles that Botox can treat:

Wrinkles are a natural part of ageing; everyone will get them eventually. But many types of wrinkles can be treated by Botox, including those caused by muscle contraction, heredity, sun damage, skin dryness, and other factors.

Here is a list of the main types of wrinkles that Botox can treat:

  •     Smoker’s lines – These are fine lines formed on the upper lip, around the mouth, and under the eyes due to facial muscle contraction caused by smoking.
  •     Frown lines – These form between your eyebrows when you frown or concentrate on something. Frown lines appear when there are repeated muscle contractions in an area not used to being contracted often. They can also result from ageing or sun exposure.
  •     Crow’s feet – They form around your eyes when you smile or laugh, often over time as you express emotion.
  •     Sun damage – Sun damage causes deep wrinkles on the face due to UV rays damaging skin cells over time. This causes collagen breakdown, leading to deep wrinkles forming on the face. The damage could become irreversible due to sun exposure if not appropriately treated.

What parts of the face can be treated with botox?

Forehead

If you have lines between your eyebrows and the outer edges of your eyes, you can treat these areas with

Between the eyes

This area is also known as glabella furrows or horizontal forehead lines that appear above the bridge of your nose and extend across the middle of your forehead.

Nasalis (Bunny lines)

are straight or diagonal lines that extend from either side of the nose and are the direct result of an overactive nasalis muscle

Anti Wrinkle Treatment

Crow’s Feet

is the term given to those fine lines around the eye area. These tiny wrinkles might also be known as “smile lines” since they’re the ones that form when we grin.

How Long Does a Botox Treatment Take?

Botox is generally administered in 20-minute sessions, one for each area of the face. You can also administer the procedure on other body parts, such as hands and feet.

If you have a lot of wrinkles to treat (such as smiling wrinkles around your mouth), it may take longer to get the desired results. This is because a higher dose of Botox is needed to achieve the same level of improvement in those areas. The average person receives between 10 and 15 units per session, while someone with severe frown lines might need up to 30 units or more!

Injections are administered either under local anaesthesia (i.e., numbing an area) or while you are awake without any discomfort at all. The only difference is that some people prefer one over another based on personal preference and comfort levels with needles.

Botox is a temporary treatment, which means that the effects of Botox don’t last forever. The results can last anywhere from three to six months, with an average duration of around four months. How long the results last depends on the individual and how much they inject into their skin.

We recommend getting injections every three to four months, depending on how quickly your wrinkles return after each treatment (you can also go longer between treatments if you want).

What other treatments can botox be used for?

Teeth Grinding (From £299)

Known medically as bruxism. Injecting small doses of Botox (botulinum toxin) directly into the masseter muscle (the jaw), weakens the muscle enough to stop habitual grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw.

Excessive Sweating (From £320)

Known medically as Hyperhidrosis. Botulinum toxin is injected into the skin and works by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves stopping the sweat glands from producing too much sweat

Migraine Treatment (From £475)

Botox is injected near the head, and neck area helps by blocking the chemicals that carry pain signals before they reach the nerve endings. This indirectly blocks the development of a migraine.

Does it hurt and what are the side effects?

This is a question that a lot of people ask and one that deserves a straight answer. The truth is that there are some Botox side effects. However, they’re usually minor and temporary—and definitely not as bad as the effects of not getting Botox!

Botox is generally safe to use. Still, it’s always important to talk to your doctor before getting any cosmetic or medical procedure. This way, you be sure you understand everything involved with having Botox done, including any potential risks or complications.

In addition, if you’ve ever had a history of migraines or headaches after surgery, your doctor might advise against getting Botox in case the injections trigger another headache.

Botox injections are numbing, so you usually don’t feel any pain. In fact, many people say they enjoy getting Botox because the procedure is quick and easy. A patient can be treated in a doctor’s office or medical spa in 15 minutes or less!

Botox’s most common side effect is bruising at the site of injection. Bruising usually goes away on its own within 1- 2 days after injection.
