Reasons to take a blood test?

Concerned

You may be concerned about a certain issue such as fatigue, tiredness or many other symptoms. A blood test is an effective way of detecting underlying health issues.

Monitor

You may be already living with a disorder or illness. A blood test is an effective way to continue to monitor the issue and its related symptoms.

Improve

A blood test can also measure and improve performance. Many athletes or individuals training for an event find this an effective way to monitor and improve performance.

Popular blood tests

We can carry out over a 1000 different blood tests so we can’t list them all on our website.

We always recommend speaking to one of our trained healthcare professionals who are trained in phlebotomy and venepuncture (the process which is used to obtain blood samples) to find out the best test for your needs.

Vitamin D Test

This test measures the level of vitamin D in your blood to make sure you have enough for your body to work well.

Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones and teeth. It also helps keep your muscles, nerves, and immune system working normally.

Having low levels of vitamin D is a common problem that can lead to bone disorders and other medical problems such as

  • Depression
  • Hair loss
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle pain
  • Recurrent infections
  • Bone pain

Vitamin B12 & Folate

This test measures the level of vitamin B12 in your blood to make sure you have enough for your body to work well.

Your body needs consistent levels of B12 to make enough red blood cells and keep your nervous system working to keep you healthy.

For most people who eat a balanced diet, low B12 levels are rare. But there are reasons why they may dip below normal. Such as if you are anaemic, have a medical condition or taking medication that affects how well your body absorbs B12 or you follow a vegan or strict vegetarian diet.

Common symptoms of low vitamin B12 include:

  • Fatigue
  • Fuzzy thinking
  • Numbness or tingling in your hands and feet
  • Headaches
  • Moodiness

Testosterone

Testosterone is a hormone produced in men and plays an important role in male health. As you get older testosterone levels start to decrease.

Testosterone levels change throughout a person’s life and usually start to decline steadily after the age of 40. Testosterone levels will also go up and down during the day, usually being higher in the morning and decreasing during the day.

A low testosterone level can result in:

  • low sex drive
  • low energy,
  • loss of muscle
  • depression

This test will measure the level of testosterone Hormone in your body to make sure you don’t have any imbalances or deficiencies

Liver Function Test

Liver function test is a blood test that helps to assess the health of your liver by looking at a number of markers including liver enzymes. Your liver does all kinds of work that’s crucial for your health. It helps break down food, clean your blood, make proteins, and store energy.

Your liver can become inflamed and progressively damaged through excessive food intake, alcohol consumption and viral hepatitis. Your liver can regenerate, but once inflammation has led to scarring (cirrhosis) then liver disease is irreversible.

If something goes wrong with the liver you might have a number of symptoms:

  • Lack of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Weakness or feeling very tired
  • Yellowish eyes or skin (jaundice)

Cholesterol

A cholesterol test can help determine your risk of the buildup of fatty deposits (plaques) in your arteries that can lead to narrowed or blocked arteries throughout your body (atherosclerosis).

High cholesterol usually causes no signs or symptoms. Therefore a cholesterol test is an important tool. High cholesterol levels often are a significant risk factor for coronary artery disease. It is important that tests are carried out on a regular basis especially as you get older.

More-frequent testing might be needed if your initial test results were abnormal or if you already have coronary artery disease, you’re taking cholesterol-lowering medications or you’re at higher risk of coronary artery disease because you:

  • Have a family history of high cholesterol or heart attacks
  • Are overweight
  • Are physically inactive
  • Have diabetes
  • Eat an unhealthy diet
  • Smoke cigarettes

Thyroid

A thyroid test checks the function of your thyroid gland which is in the front of your neck which produces hormones which help to maintain your metabolism.

It is possible for your thyroid to under-produce or over-produce thyroid hormones, and both conditions can lead to a range of symptoms.

An underactive thyroid leads to symptoms of:

  • lethargy
  • weight gain
  • dry skin and hair.

While an overactive thyroid can lead to:

  • tiredness,
  • mood problems
  • weight issues

Iron (anaemia)

Iron is an essential component of the body which makes up red blood cells to transport oxygen all around the body.

Low iron can cause anaemia, a common issue causing a list of problems starting with fatigue, weakness and coldness which can then progress to more serious conditions.

We also test for how well the body can absorb iron which may be reduced in conditions affecting the liver.

Comprehensive Full Body Blood Tests

We offer over 100 different blood tests we always recommend speaking to one of our healthcare providers to discuss your requirements, however, here are some of the more popular tests:

Weight management

This blood test investigates possible causes for an increase in your weight or for weight loss stalling. Gaining weight unexpectedly can sometimes be linked to an underactive thyroid or low levels of the hormone testosterone. With this test we also look into checking your liver function and diabetes risk which is more prevalent to people who are overweight.
